Subject Strategies

May18

Here are some of the strategies I use to tackle subjects.

PE/Sport:

  • Put effort into things such as sprints and long distance runs
  • Think positively about a hard exercise
  • Push yourself to the limit

CDT/Art:

  • Plan out the project beforehand

VR:

  • Try looking at the question on a different angle
  • Think logically

ICT:

  • Use skills learnt beforehand to complete an assignment

Latin:

  • Try to think of different ways of remembering vocabulary (e.g cubiculum=bedroom, cubiculum is like a cubicle; hence a bedroom)
  • Make sure to remember the basics when dealing with a hard passage because you can concentrate on the hard things and just forget to put in the easy things

Science:

  • Think logically
  • Use common sense
  • When doing an experiment or graph, plan what you’re doing
  • Use equations

Philosophy:

  • Look at the subject from all different angles and consider each argument
  • Remember that there is no right or wrong answer
  • Think of the deeper meaning
  • Wait a bit before saying your opinion so that you can get your thoughts straight

History:

  • When revising try to remember things colourfully or comically so you remember them(e.g when I did my history poster on William Ewart Gladstone I remembered by writing and drawing William:My name, Ewart: A yew tree with a wart and Gladstone:A happy rock)
  • Use mind maps

Geography:

  • Use locational knowledge
  • Common sense (e.g if there is a question about the capital of a country in Europe don’t put a city that you know is from a country in Asia)

Maths:

  • Analyse the whole question so that you get all the information
  • Make tables
  • Right it out simply
  • Write down your working out so that you can see what you’re doing more clearly and so you don’t get confused

English:

  • In a comprehension read through the questions first then read the piece of writing and highlight or circle the things that will be included in the question
  • Use your imagination when doing creative writing
  • When planning creative writing try to get your start and end sorted out first so you know where your going
  • Also when planning jot down a bunch of creative synonyms so that you don’t spend time thinking of a word

French:

  • Hold the word in French in your head or jot it down before you translate it so you don’t get confused when doing an oral exam
  • Translate what you know first then have a go at the things you don’t know in a sentence
  • Think of the infinitive of a verb then work out the ending that you need

Music:

  • When singing try opening your mouth wide so the sound can come out
  • On sheet music write down things you need to work on on the sheet (e.g if I need to work on playing faster on a particular section of the music I highlight that part and write “play faster here”)

RS:

  • Think of the deeper meaning in religious stories

CEP:

  • When doing General Knowledge think about the last news story you read or saw.

Strategies for solving problems / questions in main subjects

May16

To solve difficult questions in all subjects isn’t easy but if you use different strategies it becomes much easier .

These are some strategies that I use to help me in the main subjects :

Maths :    Select important information , then transform the information into an equation / make a table to find patterns / use trial and error approach to find the solution ( although it is not ideal to use this strategy in an exam ).

Science : Apply general knowledge on the subject and think logically .

English Comprehension : Read the questions carefully and find the information in the passage , and then elaborate the answer (  in different ways depending on what type of question it is e.g .  Describe the person’s character ).

Geography : Apply locational knowledge and general apprehension of the subject.

History : Make connections between facts ,to give a conclusion and use general knowledge of the subject the question is on .

French : Know vocabulary and grammar , and I use Italian to help me translate .

Latin : Know vocabulary and endings of cases ( e.g . Dative case )  , also I use italian to help me to translate.

In most of these strategies there are a few similarities :

  1.  Read the question and text carefully
  2. Use general knowlege of the subject
  3. Apply logical thinking

Brainstorm on Disasters

May5

When discussing disasters we must make sure we know what view point we are taking and try to explore each one. For instance a disaster for religion might be violent disbelievers while a disaster in the Earth’s life cycle might be extinction. In this brainstorm I will try and look at the view points.

Personal Disasters:

  • Injuring yourself badly
  • Someone you know dying
  • Losing your job
  • Losing your home

Local Disasters:

  • Wars/Conflicts
  • Localised disease e.g Malaria
  • Natural Disaster e.g Tsunamis, Volcanoes, Earthquakes
  • Famine

Global Disasters:

  • Credit Crunch
  • Pandemics e.g The Plague
  • Global Warfare

In red are the man-made disasters and in green are the natural disasters.

I think that Personal Disasters although when looking at the whole world seem trivial are the most important to us. However a lot of the disasters that are on a wide scale have repercussions that effect us personally. For instance in war you may be recruited and have to fight in the war and get injured. Or with Pandemics you could contract the disease and be seriously ill. So in a way they are all linked. Sometimes even the natural and man-made are linked, for instance if a country, i.e England was hit by a localised disease the trade between that country and Wales for instance would stop and the workers would be to sick to work meaning a famine and England’s enemies could attack them while they were weakened by the disease. This would lead to individual personal disasters as well.

Accounts of the Future

March18

I could list countless cartoons and movies and books that all give accounts of the future. To stop this article from lasting pages, I will list common themes for these accounts and give some examples.

1.Robots attack humans.

iRobot

2. Aliens/monsters attack humans

Alien; War Of The Worlds; Shade’s Children

3. The end of the world

The Time Machine

Even though a lot of predictions for the future are somewhat grim, some are not as morbid.

4. Space travel

Star Trek; Star Wars; 2001, Space Odessy

Ideas for 22th Century History

March16

Here are some of my ideas=

The working world will change dramatically as children begin to be able to learn quicker and enter it earlier.

There will be laws made limiting the amount of children people can gave due to a lack of space.

Oceans have been almost fully colonised.

The whole world has been wirelessly connected by a series of fibre networks that make travel redundant.

A unhackable database has been created consisting of the personal deatils and DNA of all people in developed nations proving majoor crimes impossible.

The whole of the Solar System has been successfuly mapped.

All man-made records (speed, height of buildings, largest structure etc. etc.) have benn well beaten.

Gaming (video games) will have progressed so much you can now live a fully interactive virtual life.

One company (I do not know which) will be so large they could single handedly take over the world if they wanted to!

Bear in mind theses are just a few of my ideas but I hope you like them, Nicolas

March15

History of The 21st Century (2000 BC- 2999 BC):

(From 2220)

Environment/Science

In the beginning of the century, the sea levels were rising very slowly and most of the land that is now underwater was above sea level for a long time. Gradually, the water levels rose quicker until nearly half of the coasts were submerged.

World waste levels got too high so garbage was used for energy. Unfortunately this gave off enormous amounts of methane and CO2 which started to destroy our environment even more.

Malaria is still uncured but many more people now have mosquito nets to protect themselves.

Scientists have proved against the part of the quantum theory that says that when a place not observed, nothing happens there. Because life is not unique and is just part of the system of atoms, observing does not make a difference.

Technology

Hybrid transport has been used by half the world’s drivers since the oil shortage of 2030.

Tiny nanochips equal the space of hard drives.

Economy

The economy had got a lot worse by 2043 but finally organisation fixed the mess that had been made and things started getting better afterwards.

Job losses increased as efficient robots replaced workers.

Entertainment

Entertainment has advanced hugely, creating such realistic virtual reality that when subjects came out of it they became disappointed with the outside world.

Unfortunately, lack of ideas for entertainment made people turn to comedy even more, making being a comedian a good job in a failing economy.

Crime

Crime has increased slightly because of the increased divide between poor and wealthy.

Events predicted for the 21st Century

March11

Here are a few events that have been predicted for the 21st century. I have changed some of them and added some.

  • Locator Chips used to find criminals
  • The discovery of the first life form outside of earth
  • Technology and Marketing become the main jobs
  • Surge of unemployment as computers do jobs themselves
  • New diseases are discovered but old diseases and some of the new diseases are combated by new cures
  • People stop going to the shops and purchasing is done entirely online
  • Virtual Conferencing eliminates the need for traveling around to get to a conference
  • The first woman president is elected in the U.S
  • Instead of muscle needed for jobs like moving belongings from one house to another brains, communication and technology are needed
  • Mobile phones become smaller and smaller until they are just microchips
  • Virtual Reality develops and is available to the public and is one of the primary games consoles
  • With technology advancing more animal species are discovered underwater
  • The leading cause of death becomes epidemics thus meaning more health measures to be made which then encourages people to stay indoors to avoid getting diseases meaning a rise in obesity (unless indoor exercise machines are created for a cheaper price) and a rise in the Technology business as people do more and more things online because they do not want to go outside.
  • The world land speed record is exceeded
  • Energy Efficient Hybrid vehicles are mass produced and replace many fuel cars. These Hybrid vehicles could use, hydrogen, electricity and hydroelectricity

Ideas for history report from 22nd century

March8

Here are some of my ideas about what could happen in between now and the 22nd century.
Geography
• 45% of coastal land would be underwater, due to rise in sea level due to global warming.
This will lead to a number of things
1)Global regugees
2)unrest in cities
3) With a large incerease of people in one area there will be lots of makeshift shelters created

• Mars has been colonized and the terraforming process is 5% completed.

Both of the above points are linked that if the world is destroyed we can move to mars to live
Science
• Humans have been successfully cloned and 15% of the world’s population is now identical.

Technolagy
• Weapons have become so dangerous that an international treaty has put an end to inter-country war.

• Hard-drives have been rendered obsolete as all data is stored in neutral depositories linked directly to the internet.

•AI (Artificial Intelligence) has advanced to the point of robots being self controlled for 85% of functions.

• Computer input devices (keyboards, mouse, etc.) are obsolete with interface linked directly to nerve impulses.

Rhetoric

March5

The 5 canons of rhetoric are 5 basic rules for the art of public speaking. They can also be used in essays so can come in pretty useful.

1.Inventio-Invention

2.Dispositio-Arrangement

3.Elocutio-Style

4.Memoria-Memory

5.Actio-Delivery

Pot Pourri

March3

Here’s a useful word for essays. Pot Pourri is in short a pile of petals or in more detail a concoction of dried plant material that smells good. In modern language it is used to just mean a mixture of anything that interests you. Example of use: My blog was a Pot Pourri of quotes from Piggy McPigpog’s famous book Pigswings Sings. The Wikipedia page is here.
